The Hot Springs at Esalen
"At Esalen there are some large baths fed by hot springs situated on a ledge about thirty feet above the ocean. One of my most pleasurable experiences has been to sit in one of those baths and watch the waves crashing onto the rocky shore below, to gaze into the clear blue sky above, and to study a beautiful nude as she quietly appears and settles into the bath with me."
--from a Commencement Address at CalTech, 1974
Ralph Leighton: "Later that month, I was invited to go with Richard to the Esalen Institute, a "secular monastery" on the California coast of Monterey. As we drove up the coast I kept stopping to take pictures. The Chief became more and more impatient to reach our destination. When we arrived, I understood why: there is no more beautiful place on the California coast than Esalen--especially when one takes into account the added attraction of nudes sunning themselves on massage tables, or soaking in baths fed by natural hot springs perched on a cliff."--from Tuva or Bust!
