Ralph Leighton: "At the end of January, 1988, Chris Sykes came out from Longon to interview Richard. The Chief was often tired and occasionally depressed. But when he began talking about Tuva, his malaise disappeared. His face lit up, his eyes sparkled, his enthusiasm for life was infectious. Between episodes of storytelling we beat out some old, familiar rhythms on our drums. It seemed obvious to everyone around him that Richard's discomfort and depression were psychological.
